Keep Mom about this one

You could say I was always keen on mum. Growing up, mom was an americanism that no one I knew used. That is no longer the case. Mom has taken over. Look at the mom-mum ngrams. Some might spell it mom but pronounce it mum. That would explain the cases of ‘keeping Mom about’ something, and ‘Shhh, Mom’s the word’, neither of which make much sense.

Mom’s the word, and Bobbie’s your aunt.

we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)
