You could say I was always keen on mum. Growing up, mom was an americanism that no one I knew used. That is no longer the case. Mom has taken over. Look at . Some might spell it mom but pronounce it mum. That would explain the cases of ‘keeping Mom about’ something, and ‘Shhh, Mom’s the word’, neither of which make much sense.
