Have it out for?

Apologies in advance for low eggcorn content.

A tweet posted by journalist Matt Taibbi asked “Does the media have it out for Elizabeth Warren?” Link: https://twitter.com/mtaibbi/status/1073669949309108224

I’m from the Midwest and grew up with “have it in for.” Is Taibbi’s version a regionalism? If so, it’s one I’ve never encountered before.

I’ll try to make it up to you with two eggcornish formulations, both spotted in the wild on Twitter:

– “All packed for panama, just a few odds and ins left.” – “I would love to learn the ends and outs of photography.”

Re: Have it out for?

I love “odds and ins” and “ends and outs”. I don’t find the first already reported, but the second one is, here .
.
I suppose “have it out for” could be a blend of “have it in for” with and “have it out with”, and maybe “be on the outs with” as well. All three describe what is likely to be the case if you really don’t like somebody and you show it.

Re: Have it out for?

I saw it as “have it in for” and “be out to get”.

Re: Have it out for?

Sounds right. All of the above could well be active.

I think it’s also possible that some perps are operating with a vague notion of having some weapon (or even a phallus) out (of the holster, scabbard, pants or whatever), ready to be used on whoever they have it out for.
