"momentous" as a possible blend

In today’s Scientific American, a computer scientist describes the challenge of writing software for a new supercomputer:

“The algorithmic complexity to write that code for a machine like Titan is momentous,” says Tom Evans, an Oak Ridge computational scientist.

Not an eggcorn, but it did stop me in my tracks. It can’t be a simple malaprop, either, I don’t think – a malaprop for what? I wonder if it’s not a blend of immense and momentum, and yet at the same time, momentous in the sense of being historic. And maybe some monumental thrown in?
