The cast: I, my wife, my 11-year old grandson
The place: in the car, driving to town
The time: three days ago
The occasion: a discussion of a popular movie prequel
The leadin: My wife asks what a prequel is. My grandson explains that it a sequel whose plot time is set prior to the movie preceding it.
The setup: My grandson asks what a sequel would be called if it were set in the same time frame as its predecessor
The punch line: I say that it would be called an “equel.â€
OK, I know it’s a pun, not an eggcorn. It’s not even a rotten eggcorn (a pun that becomes an eggcorn). I’m just putting the Internet gods on notice; when “equel” enter the dictionary, make sure I get credit for it.
Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.

Full credit, kem. It’s a jewel. It’s what the thing ought to be called.
