"tater tops" for "tater tots"

“Tater Tots” is a brandname for a line of US “food products” consisting of chopped potatoes that are formed into small cylinders and baked till crispy. I often suspect that products like this are made of the salvageable bits of otherwise spoiled vegetables – maybe just the tops of the potato? (Can you tell which end is up with a potato?) I’m not quite sure that everyone who uses this is thinking that way, so I’m gonna stick it down here in “Slips, etc.” I love the second example – downhome American cooking at its very best. But the third example shows that even tater tops can be frou-frou.

So are “extra crispy” versions of H.J. Heinz Company’s Fast Fried and Tater Tops, all of which are formulated to guarantee crispness on the outside and tenderness on the inside.

Let’s begin by browning one pound of hamburger meat, draining it and placing it in the bottom of a 9×13 casserole dish. [...] In a separate bowl, combine a can of cream of mushroom soup with a can of celery soup and a cup of milk. Pour the mixture over the meat and layer a 32 ounce bag of thawed tater tops across the top. That’s it, friends.

Make a vegetarian happy with a mixed mushroom sauté, or maybe some flavorful wilted greens on the tater tops, or even applesauce.

I really like this one too, and I wouldn’t analyse it as “the top of a potato” but as “tops [whatever they are] made from potatoes”.

I’ve wondered whether people might be thinking of the small spinning toy called a “top.” You can certainly spin a tater tot, but it’s best to do so before rather than after you put ketchup or mustard on it.
