April nonces 2017

Late delivery of this year’s April First noncense. In time for Easter though.

These rumours have not yet hit the scoreboard.

I do hope this letter finds you well and puts to rest scoreless rumours that have originated from fair Hommlet as to the conduct of sisters of the Church of The One

Re: April nonces 2017

I was anticipating your annual roundup of one-offs in March. But when it didn’t appear on April 1, it slipped from my mind. Thank you for not forgetting your fans. Some notes.

(1) It took me a while to figure out the acorn of “scoreless rumours.” “Scurrilous!”

(2) “Pitfaults” for “pitfalls” is good. Peter mentioned it here.

(3) “Beaverwhacking”

All well and good beaverwhacking in an open field

In the UK and previous colonies, beaver scouting is the level before cub scouts. Since this quotation is from a UK scouts forum, I assume that the person is constructing (or accessing) a neologism for bushwhacking with beaver scouts.

(4) I found a second example of “hating and abetting:”

Comment on Israeli news site: “Belgium can be relied upon to consistently hate and abet those trying to harm Jews.”

If there were enough example to prove “hating and abetting” was an eggcorn, it might be a controcorn that refutes its eggcorn. Hating is opposed to aiding. Though I could still see it as an expansion of the basic meaning of “aiding and abetting:” Hating the crime, you know, but still helping the criminal.

(5) “Leaks like a sleeve” has legs. Besides the two examples you cited, we also have

Concrete contractor web site: “The median is about 1 micron (1,000nm) but a water molecule is 3,000 times smaller (0.28 nm) by all logic, concrete should leak like a sleeve ”

Vaping forum: “would not carry a Kanger tank [the thing] leaks like a sleeve.”

Programming newsgroup: “Note that the valgrind-check-func seems to leak like a sleeve ”

(6) There are more examples of “run/ran/running rompant.” Here’s one:

Wrestling forum: “Chelsea ran rompant over Man City”

The other examples I found, however, were all from old newspaper archives, so they may be OCR silicisms.

(7) In our original discussion of “Rube Goldberg devices” (one of our more entertaining discussions) we considered the replacement of “rude” with “rube,” but we never made the ultimate connection between “rube” and the proper name “Rube” in “Rube Goldberg.” You have tied off a very loose end.

Re: April nonces 2017

Thanks for checking on those, Kem. I appear to have been a bit overeager in declaring some of them as singletons. I like the controcorn angle for hate and abet. Thanks also for the link to another classic from Peter, including pipbull.

I should have included a list of acorns: scurrilous, pitfalls, glance, peers, rampant, bivouacking, war mongrel monger, aiding and abetting, sieve, rampant, Rube Goldberg.

Re: April nonces 2017

I got the beaverwhacking, but thought the scorelous rumours were a combination of scores of countless ones.

Rube Gober cracks me up too. Is Goober involved in there?

Re: April nonces 2017

If Goober and Gomer got married (it is legal for two cousins to marry in North Carolina), would they name their kid Goomer?

My inner U. S. fifth grader is having fits over all these beavers.
“Beaver Scouts” sounds more like the stage after Boy Scouts.
Beaverwhacking in the woods? Wasn’t Candy Barr in that?

Yes, and her costar was the famous Hugh G. Rection. I believe they costarred in several films, including the classics Terms of Endowment, Genital Hospital, and Shaving Ryan’s Privates.

Re: April nonces 2017

I see the development of “hating and abetting” as abetting because of hatred, which helps it make sense.
