fiber of my bean

Had to chuckle at the recent Sherman’s Lagoon strip.

Is “every fiber of my bean” a real eggcorn? It’s certainly a pun. It’s on greeting cards and you can buy it on T-shirts.

There are a few examples on the web that may be genuine eggcornish slips. With the pun so pervasive, though, it’s hard to know whether these are tongue-in-cheek. Examples:

Mormon testimony sample:”: “I no with ever fiber of my bean that (_) is TRUE!”

Blog fiction?:”: … 748626.htm “I love this man with every fiber of my bean”

Job forum:”: … 748626.htm “When I say racist I mean that with every fiber of my bean.”

We do, however, have at least one confession by someone who once employed the slip.

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.

Re: fiber of my bean

The perp said he or she didn’t know what kind of a bean he/she had (if any), and thought beans could not have fibers, and wondered if it was metaphorical. I would have assumed that it was the head/brain―we used to say somebody got beaned or hit on the beaner/beezer when he got hit on the head. And beans are a source of dietary fiber; some even taste kind of fibrous.
Good reminder: just because we can think of a rationale for a mistake doesn’t mean the perps do (or don’t).

*If the human mind were simple enough for us to understand,
we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)
