Spangle and its variants are rarely used, except for the starry banner of course, so I was surprised to find it supplanting spanking in this phrase, although the sense of spanking here is probably even more obscure. (There was a make of boiled sweets called Spangles, which unaccountably disappeared in the 1980s; the colours of the Old English variety were particularly entrancing. Utterly irrelevant of course, but many of us miss them still.)
