'brand spangling new' for 'brand spanking new'

Spangle and its variants are rarely used, except for the starry banner of course, so I was surprised to find it supplanting spanking in this phrase, although the sense of spanking here is probably even more obscure. (There was a make of boiled sweets called Spangles, which unaccountably disappeared in the 1980s; the colours of the Old English variety were particularly entrancing. Utterly irrelevant of course, but many of us miss them still.)

Yep, it’s up in a brand spangling new ‘Drains’ section.

And just like that, a few months after the closing of St John Hotel, a brand spangling new phoenix rises from the yet-to-settled ashes, and what a fine beautiful bird this turned out to be.

And while other reviews spoke about things becoming worn & taddier, yes, they aren’t brand spangling new, but they appear well cared for.

Hi Folks My brand spangling new KLR 650 was rolled out of my garage by some thieving F**kers the night before last.

The batteries in both basses are brand spangling new and the pedal itself is running off a 9vDC power adapter (which i’ve also crosschecked with other adapters).

There’s the glitter of the newly-minted in this simbling too.

If a brand sparkling new home appeals, look no further.

She has a new name, a new look, and a brand-sparkling new reputation.

A brand-sparkling-new adaptation of Shakespeare’s whimsical classic about fairies, love potions and talking donkeys.

The locker rooms are brand sparkling new and very clean, in fact the whole place is immaculate.

Re: 'brand spangling new' for 'brand spanking new'

The “spanking” part, the OED suggests, might be a dialectical variation of the “span” part of the ancient phrase “span-new,” which seems to mean something like “splinter/chip new.” I’ve never heard the “span-new” phrase, but the “span” part hangs around in “spick and span.”

“Spangling new.” An effective eggcorn.
