lushious << luscious

Eggcorns are like morels. Some days you sweat in the woods for hours and find nothing. Other days you open your back screen door and there they are.

A screen door eggcorn came my way yesterday. On Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day I read:

Have you ever heard a young child say something is “licius” when he or she really means it’s “delicious”? Back in the Middle Ages, the word “licius” was sometimes used as a shortened form of “delicious” by adults and kids alike. Linguists believe that “luscious” developed when “licius” was further altered by 15th-century speakers. Both words ultimately derive from the Latin verb “delicere,” meaning “to entice by charm or attraction.” The adjective “lush,” which can sometimes mean “delicious” as well, is not a shortened form of “luscious”; it derived on its own from the Middle English “lusch,” meaning “soft or tender.

I had no idea that “lush” and “luscious” were not related. Thousands of writers, also ignorant of this fact, have taken the next logical step and spelled “luscious” as “lushious.”

Three lushious examples from the hundreds, perhaps thousands, on the web:

User review on Rotten Tomatoes: “Whilst Tatum is still as lushious as he was in ‘she’s the man’ the whole film was not overall lushious as i had imagined…”

Comment on a gaming site: “So, you could make super lushious graphics in a MMO….”

Soap selling site: “Fabulous mouthwatering scents with top quality essential oils and fragrances create these heavenly bath bombs. Super fizzy, lushious smelling….”

It’s amazing that this one hadn’t been caught before. The déluge is still a ways off, on the evidence of finds like this natural. Delish.

Mmmm. Morels.

When I heard this word on the radio recently the speaker seemed to linger hesitantly on the hinge of the word just long enough to alert the ear to the possibility of an alternative meaning or, at least, derivation. Briefly, she revealed the lust in luscious which, had we not been otherwise informed, might have seemed a likelier progenitor.

Lustuous, breezy, romantic atmosphere with breath taking view of the Atlantic Ocean – accompanied by an Italian influenced cross cultural cuisine.

Parle Hide And Seek Fab Choco Chip Chocolate Flavour Biscuit are filled with lustuous chocolate cream and oddles of choco chips

What a beautiful beautiful sterling silver necklace featuring a dark, rich color AAA madeira citrine smooth pear shaped natural gemstone, with a lustuous glowing, buttery surface and dazzling clarit

The American Lavazza commercial took on a romantic and lustuous atmosphere, attributing such romance within its coffee.

Imagine this, you are alloved to fly around the beautiful tropical paradise, where the game’s action happens, enjoying lustious colors of the trees, the sun, the sky, the sea.
