drill < grill

The meanings are close: drill can often be “take (others or oneself) repeatedly through the answers to a set of questions (with a view to the drillee learning them)”, whereas grill would be “take (others) repeatedly through a set of questions (with a view to extracting the true information they might be hiding).”

While Cheryl B.’s 11- and 12-year-old daughters taught her the latest dance moves, she drilled them about their social lives.

The family drilled us about [what our plans/intentions were]

[she] drilled her on her home, which she was sure to visit

He drilled us about what my friend and I wanted to do after high school.

They told us that we need to see the Probation Officer, before they drilled us for about one hour. I think they were just trying to test us out

Roundtrip?

They grilled us on tactics and the Constitution with burpees and push-ups as punishment for a wrong or slow answer.

Then he grilled us on Latin (a subject my mom excelled in…sort of…she gave a Greek root instead of the Latin one he asked for)

There are doubtless better examples out there. (These feel too much like the drilling was more an examination technique than a training technique, so they are cases of grilling as well.)

*If the human mind were simple enough for us to understand,
we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)

Re: drill < grill

Nice find. A good round-tripper.

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
