Moving threads

Now that I know how to move threads, the interesting question for me is this: When should a thread be moved when no one has requested it? I guess when a newbie, say, makes a Soapbox-type comment in Contribute—which happens from time to time—there’s no problem in moving the thread. But if a newbie posts something in Contribute that’s clearly a mere malaprop, should it get moved with a comment to Slips? Or should we let the regulars’ comments take care of the problem on the original page? The obvious problem here is that the eggcorn/malaprop line is one of the main things the Contribute forum addresses, so there could be a disagreement about when something is “clearly” a non-eggcorn.

If a regular asks for a thread to be moved—esp. its initiator—that seems non-problematic to me as long as no one else involved objects. And it’s hard to imagine circumstances under which a long-time contributor’s thread would be moved without a request from them or people intimately involved in the thread. I think doing otherwise might give the mod too much latitude to determine eggcornicity.

Comments? I want to make sure that no feathers are raffled if posts are moved.

(“Raffled * feathers” gets 11 ughits).
