"compliment" for "complement"

This substitution has heretofore been mentioned in the Eggcorn Database only in passing.

I’ve seen this one lots of times and initially wrote it off as just a misspelling. But upon consideration, I think there’s a plausible meaning confusion here, which may mean it’s an eggcorn for some perps. Both complimenting and complementing make us look good.

Re: "compliment" for "complement"

I too keep seeing this in contexts where “complement” is meant, but it is clearly a completion that says something good about the now-completed object of the complement. Or “compliment” is meant, but the compliment makes things perfect or adds the cream on top of the already-perfect complemented object.
.
Plenty of times it’s not an eggcorn, but I agree that sometimes it is.
