A “mother lode” is a large collection of a particular type of thing—“lode” being an ore deposit (in particular) or an abundant store (in general). A “load” carries the same denotation of an amount (as “lode” does), and “mother” adds the connotation of a grandness of scale. Whence the eggcorn “mother load” as an abundance amount.
