"precedent" for "prescient"

From an article today about the award of the Nobel Prize to Orhan Pamuk:

“We’re very proud that on this day that Orhan Pamuk is here at Columbia,” said Columbia University Provost, Alan Brinkley. “I wish we could have all been precedent enough to anticipate this event because it happens that President Bollinger is away from New York when the news came in this morning.”

The reporter is probably at fault here, not the Provost. I think this is an eggcorn but I’m not feeling clever enough to work out the mental process that hatched it.
