Heard this morning on BBC Radio 2: the term ‘carpetblaggers’ for ‘carpetbaggers’. The term ‘blagger’ is close in meaning to a con-man, someone prepared to wheedle and extort for personal gain, and therefore supports and endorses the meaning of the original. Unfortunately Google lends no support, but several million people heard it and that should count for something, shouldn’t it?

Incidentally, is “blagger” a derivative of “blackguard”?

David, when I lived in Shropshire I encountered what I thought to be the word ‘blaggard’ used mainly as a verb – once I heard it used also as a noun I realised that ‘blackguard’ was alive and well and not living out some shadowy existence in historical fiction. I assume it’s leaked out into this changed form.
And congratulations on your imminent elevation – the style seemed strangely familiar but I feared some occult shoaling phenomenon and am relieved by your explanation.
