If this is an eggcorn, the eggcorners may be assuming that a ‘cornel’ is the central part of corn, which in a way it is since kernel comes from OE cyrnel, dim. of corn seed.
I also like it because in my dialect kernel is pronounced in this way and it’s gratifying to think others may do so too.
