A “mortar and pestle” is a bowl-like container (mortar) and an arm (pestle) with a clubbed end for grinding solids into powder. This device is used in pharmacy and chemistry applications, and it is most common to hear the two words mentioned together rather than separately.
A “pedestal” is the base of an upright structure. It is not entirely clear what a person might be thinking when they utter the eggcorn “mortar and pedestal:” Some may not give much thought as to which is the container and which is the grinding arm, and associate the container with a pedestal for holding up material to be ground.
