Obnoxious fumes instead of Noxious Fumes

I had a friend growing up who often used the term “obnoxious fumes” when referring to something that smelled really bad to the point of seeming harmfull, instead of the more correct term “Noxious fumes”

The dictionary lists Noxious as referring to something that is physcially harmful, or morally corruptive. And Obnoxious as something that is unpleasant and potentially harmful.

I found several references on the internet of uses of obnoxious fumes.

I always used to laugh when he used the term and noted that it made more “sense” than the proper term, but didn’t realize until I stumbled on this website that it may have been an “eggcorn”.
