An old linguistics professor of mine used to talk about folk etymology, such as when 16th English speakers possibly borrowed the Old French crevice (crab) as crayfish, as it was somehow more logical and familiar that way. Is folk etymology an explanation as to why so many eggcorns are created? Does it only refer to foreign language borrowings?
