It’s only one little vowel change – I wonder if it sounds more ‘a’ than ‘e’ in many dialects? Certainly it sounds like South African English but most of the citations I’ve found so far are UK-based. I’m assuming the eggcorn, if it is one, centres upon the word ‘accent’ which being a regional or local variant of dominant speech may render the speaker peculiar, different, unusual or even eccentric to the ears of the dominant speech community…
