I just came across the expression “skimmed latte”, which I take to be an error for the more usual “skinny latte” – “skimmed latte” gets just under 300 Google hits, “skinny latte” more than 30,000. But a skinny latte is made from skimmed milk, so in a sense to call it a skimmed latte is more correct – have some people been mishearing “skinny latte” as “skimmed latte” and, knowing it’s make with skimmed milk, saying “skimmed latte” in the believe that this is what everybody else is saying? Or do they actually know about “skinny latte” and say “skimmed latte” as an alternative?
Even worse, did “skinny latte” originate as an eggcorn because someone (?in Seattle) misheard “skimmed milk latte” as “skinny latte” and thought the drink was called that because being low fat, it would keep you skinny … only for skinny latte to become the mainstream name for skimmed milk latte …
I have a headache.
