On the ferment / foment thing:

I couldn’t post this on the main page for some reason, but some of the trouble must be from a less common definition of “ferment.” To wit:

2 a : a state of unrest : AGITATION b : a process of active often disorderly development <the great period of creative ferment in literature—William Barrett>

The word “ferment” can itself be used to mean something like “trouble.” No wonder people get confused and write “to ferment trouble.”
