RUGSACK instead of Rucksack

Thanks to The New Scientist for pointing me to this quirky area of linguistics.
I have always used – Rugsack instead of Rucksack – and always associated it with the rolled up sleaping bag, mat or indeed rug that was tied on to either the top or bottom.
