By the by/bye (revisited)

Google counts on Apr 5, 2007:
1,100,000 “by the by”
217,000 “By the bye”

There was a brief mention of these in the comment section of the Eggcorn Database under “bye and bye.” Perhaps more discussion is needed. I’ve always assumed “by the bye” was correct, but I’m no expert.
