“To debug a program” means to identify and remove the errors that are impairing its performance. “To debunk a myth” means to identify and challenge factual errors in certain types of narrative or claim The parallels are clear enough and have led to the occasional use of the former for the latter. Looking for a rare use of “debug” on the Web ain’t no picnic – I found fewer than 2 dozen instances, but if I’d had the time and patience to wade through all the permutations of “debug/debugs/debugged/debugging assertions/asseverations/claims,” etc., I could probably have found a few more. Examples:
