A good rule of them...

“Rule of them” instead of “Rule of Thumb”—First encountered on an Anandtech article which has since been corrected.

Examples can easily be found by googling with the following search string:
“rule of them” -all

Some examples:
“A general rule of them is that “long-day” onions do better in northern states (north of 36th parallel) while “short-day” onions do better in states south of that line.”—http://plantanswers.tamu.edu/publicatio … ongro.html

“As a rule of them, when the American’s turn up, it’s time to make tea.”—http://www.thedigeratipeninsula.org.uk/ … mans-ball/

...and I find this one particularly delicious.
“When I was acquiring manuscripts inside a publishing house, our rule of them was to contract a manuscript to arrive inside the publishing house a full year before the release date.”—http://www.right-writing.com/insight-inside.html

Enjoy!
