'heartening/hardening of the arteries'

‘Heartening’ of the arteries would be to encourage them; it’s clear the word is not being used in this sense so I’m inclined to see it as no more than a malapropism. Only 8 Googlehits and most of those just wordplay…

He died of heartening of the arteries on April 1, 1933 at 9:30 PM in Milwaukee, buried the 4th of April on the Last Home Cemetery, Germantown. ...
