The ham/hand alteration has already had good documentation in the Database, so it’s a bit remarkable that there are still undocumented variations on it out there. “Ham radio” appears to be a corruption of “amateur radio”; if you don’t know that, however, the phrase “ham radio” looks very odd. And by comparison with the semi-automated pros, “hams” do a lot more by hand. Examples:

You know, I’m a hand-radio operator, so I used to spend my late-nights growing up in the ‘70s on my hand-radio listening to people with my ear to the radio tweaking out a signal report.
