bombfire for bonfire

As a little boy, I used to think “bombfire” was what all the adults were saying. Like a bomb, it put off quite a bit of fire. Sometimes the initial ignition was also bomb-like. It appears that several grown-ups have not gotten the memo:

Interesting note: OED states: 1556, from M.E. banefire (1483), originally a fire in which bones were burned. Johnson mistakenly derived it from Fr. bon “good.”

Yeah, I know, kinda gross, right? Maybe Johnson had an eggcorn of his own. His imagery was different, and much more palatable. See you at the bone-fire! Woo-hoo!

Thanks, Joe, I tried to delete it, but it’s not giving me the option, now.

Booboo—If you’re sure you want it gone, we can do that.

Re: bombfire for bonfire

Pat,
Booboo’s post seems to have a few examples that are worth saving. Perhaps he (or you) could copy his post over as a reply to Peter’s before removing it here. Besides, both efforts were conducted independently of one another, and this isn’t our first duplication. It can even stay put if Booboo decides.

Re: bombfire for bonfire

Thanks for all the help. I think it’s right to keep Peter’s post as the main one. I flatter myself thinking that the part of my post about the bones, at least, is worth including on Peter’s. Whatever is the easiest way to do that is fine with me. After that, I think this thread should go. Thanks for all your consideration in the matter. Y’all treat a man good around here.

Re: bombfire for bonfire

As I’ve mentioned before, siameez got there first – it didn’t show up on the search because the word was separated into two parts:

Well, should we just leave things as they are? I’m starting to like this thread—the inner workings of the forum exposed.

Re: bombfire for bonfire

Sure, leave it. It helps keep track of its discovery. I’m sure Peter and I are happy to be reinforcers of the original post by siameez, and satisfy ourselves that great minds think alike!
