'cast a weary eye' for 'cast a wary eye'

A patient of mine used this today to express both her suspicion of her spouse’s excessive drinking and her tiredness of being suspicious. In context, it made perfect sense. There was an earlier post on the forum, suggesting that ‘weary’ sometimes gets used as a combination of ‘wary’ and ‘leery,’ but the examples seemed unpersuasive. Embedded in this phrase, the substitution is more obvious:
