In some programming languages, the exclamation mark can be used to indicate comment text that is not interpreted by the computer reading the program. It’s only there as an EXPLANATION of the code to a human reader. A computer programmer would refer to the ! as “bang,” but there is at least a semantic path for it to be an explanation mark.
Why are the comments closed on some eggcorns in the database?

Welcome! Love this one! And it’s pretty widespread. You can find it in the Database, which is (for some reason) harder to search than the forum. I think it’s a different search engine? But when I googled it, trying to find ghits for this one, the database entry popped up. You can find it here: http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/english/632/explanation/
As to the closed comments, I’m not sure….
Feeling quite combobulated.

I actually found it in the database, while looking for “part for the course.” I just wanted to comment on it, but comments were closed. Within board etiquette or no?

Tangential, at best, but I just like saying “interrobang”: http://www.interrobang-mks.com/.

Qov—the site owner closed comments on nearly all Database entries a little over a year ago due to technical issues that have never been resolved. A few recent entries appear to allow comments, but as far as I can tell, they don’t work either. Chris—the owner—said in June that she means to re-enable comments, but I don’t expect to see that any time soon. Regulars here occasionally post comments on Database entries on the forum’s “Eggcornology” page—just as you’ve done. Best we can do for now.
