“Back by popular demand” is an in-the-language expression that we’re all familiar with. There is certainly nothing wrong with modifying it’s usage and saying that something is “backed by popular demand” since the alternate meaning of “back” is readily understood. ...But I suspect that some of these modifications are made with no conscious effort to pun. So, the only remaining issue is whether a person who says “backed by popular demand” is unaware of the protype expression “back by popular demand.” If so, I suppose we could call this an eggcorn, but I’m having a hard time convincing myself that anyone would not know the prototype.
