Fall out of FLAVOR (favor)

(I was inspired to check on this one after seeing the string using “fall out of favor.” We’ve also touched upon the favor/flavor interchange in the past—going the other direction. Finally, I did post “curry flavor” before as part of another string.)

The expression “fall out of favor” means “be disgraced,” but it also seems to take on the milder meaning “no longer prefered.” The substitution of “flavor” for “favor” draws more upon the latter, and “flavor” is used in the sense of “character” ...I would even suggest that it might connote “fashion.”

So, in the examples below, the modified idiom takes on the meaning “fall out of fashion.”

Re: Fall out of FLAVOR (favor)

It might help to approach this from a slightly different angle…

Since the intended meaning seems to be “fall out of fashion,” I would suggest that this is the target idiom for the meaning. But, perhaps the other idiom “fall out of favor” runs interference on a cognitive level. Perhaps we end up with a bit of an idiom blend where “flavor” serves as a proxy for “fashion.”

Re: Fall out of FLAVOR (favor)

I wonder how much “Flavor of the Month” is influencing this reshaping/idiom blend? It is often used somewhat disparagingly to refer to someone (or something) that is popular or trendy at the moment with the idea that his or its moment in the spotlight/fifteen minutes of fame will soon be over…

Feeling quite combobulated.
