Another classic car find, but examples have since slipped away from eBay. Patination is the venerable bloom of age on bronze sculptures, coins and latterly anything old or valuable. ‘Patternation’ is used to describe deliberate or natural decorative patterns – spray techniques, reptile/butterfly markings etc, and seems a useful word in its own right but I can find no dictionary entries. Some ‘patternation’ usage does seem to refer to patination, which seems a reasonable, eggcornish interpretation should the user be unaware of the word ‘patina’.

Great find. This one comes with a bonus: not only is “patternation” a cool eggcorn, but I had known only “patina,” not “patination.” Thanks!
