"emphatuated" for "infatuated"

Obviously influenced in equal measure by DavidTuggy’s post on “infactically” and by the lyrics to the Atomic Kitten song “You Are.” I guess you could make an eggcornish argument for this one: infatuation is indeed a rather emphatic feeling. But it ultimately feels less infactically eggcornish to me than “infactically,” so I’ve stuck it down here among slips. 370 raw / 140 unique. Examples:

Hopefully, there will be more about the Bible and less about authentic personhood, human dignity and the other existentialist stuff that JPII was emphatuated with.

This is a welcomed variant in the MIT series “Writing Architecture” whose other tomes are, for the most part, examples of postmodernistic self-emphatuated drivel!

You really are an angry little child who is emphatuated with your southern teams.

As for dwarves, I believe that Gimli was quite emphatuated with Galadriel as well.

Jonas Complex is highly driven and passionate about creating and performing music, demonstrating an unparalleled ability to express an undying angst wrapped around melodic episodes of vulnerability- capturing the human experience and molding it into murals of musical exploration contained within song structures that leave both the biggest music afficionados and casual listeners intrigued if not emphatuated.

Re: "emphatuated" for "infatuated"

I had never heard of Atomic Kitten, so I followed up on Pat’s comment… Serendipitously, the YouTube video for “You are” has the lyrics written across the screen. At 2:04 into the song come the lines, “Ooh I wish you’d ask me how I feel. I’d say that I’m emphatic.” (stress added). At first it struck me that the intended word was “ecstatic.” Then it struck me that maybe “emphatic” was intended in some nuanced way… i.e., “my mind’s made up.” Then, I thought maybe it’s just a malapropism—with the target meaning being “infatuated.” At any rate, perhaps a new usage is coming into it’s own. It sets a good backdrop for the eggcorn usages that Pat writes about in his post.

“Emphatuated” is an eggcorn, and one of the best I’ve seen (We’ve had a lot of good ones lately, haven’t we?).

You should get a Webby for “the most gratuitous reference to Atomic Kitten on the internet.”

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
