The imagery certainly changes from being spotlighted, and thus in the public eye, to living some kind of enviable and/or highly-visible life(style). I’m not sure what lime has to do with things in either case. (Ha, I guessed right, that an old way of producing brilliant illumination involved burning lime.) Some usages cater to the life(style) meaning; others to the older “in the public eye” meaning.

“Lime life” is surprisingly common. I like this one-enjoying the lime life conveys some sense of a lifestyle full of citrus fruit and sun. Retirement to Florida. Coolers on the beach. Vitamin sea.
