"ride of way" for "right of way"

Over 200 Google hits. The Database already has “right away” for “right of way,” but this one actually makes a little more sense to me. The person with the right of way rides right on through. Though of course the phrase can also apply to pedestrians, as the second citation makes clear. When bicycles are the main focus of discussion, it can be hard to tell whether deliberate wordplay is afoot. Examples:

Stock animals have the ride of way. Stand still on the uphill side of the trail to allow them to pass.

Safety in the cross walks on campus- people walking have the ride of way.

I think what’s been lost in the debate is the ride-of-way also includes multi-million dollar plans to improve the landscape along St. Clair with wider sidewalks and trees.

The worst part of commuting by bicycle would have to be the rude SUV drivers who’d rather run cyclists off the road than grant ride-of-way.

In a world where two to 18 wheels, compete for space, they know who has the ride of way.

Re: "ride of way" for "right of way"

I found 500+ ghits for ‘rite of way’ which completes the circle right->rite->ride..Examples:

He said the rite of way has been used and maintained by the town …

You will be responsible for topography, and rite of way surveying and will run the surveying group for this 50 year old engineering consulting company.
