Dual/dualling for duel/duelling

Headline in the print edition of the San Francisco Chronicle, Aug. 12, 2008:
Incumbent Berkeley
mayor, predecessor
to dual for office again
I guess duelling twice makes it a “dual.”
Link to story here: http://tinyurl.com/637sqx
But the hed was changed for the online version.

Second cite: “a geographic equilibrium servicing the dualing needs of business & pleasure” from the design blog Brand New (http://tinyurl.com/6zr4hu).
Again, TWO needs, which probably suggested “dual” rather than “duel” to the author.

Re: Dual/dualling for duel/duelling

Just the fact that there are two fighters makes a duel a dual.
