'turnpipe' for 'turnpike'

It’s natural to analogize traffic to a fluid and roads to pipes; in Boston, we call the main highway through town the “Central Artery.’ About 300 ghits:

The adventure quickly begins on a Nebraska turnpipe.

If I could fly from there on a magic carpet ride, I’d head down the Jersey Turnpipe, and I’d stop at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park …

1760-70 started the major road improvements as the turnpipe trusts came to existence.
