Most amphitheaters are in fact fairly ample theaters. The two phrases work so well to describe the same phenomenon that it’s sometimes hard to be sure a writer is actually committing an eggcorn – the final citation below is an example. In many other cases, though, the wonder of the Internet allows us to confirm that the writer is indeed talking about an amphitheater. In the bracketed comments, I named the ones I was able to identify. It’s very hard to count this since “ample theater†is a string that can occur in many non-eggcornish environments. Examples:
Central point was going to be getting a super wal-mart but was turned down. The Ample Theater was finished at the Expo and all of the singers for the Fair will be getting to use it instead of them being right in the middle of the fair grounds.

Daniel began preaching on the corner of Yamhill and Broadway. I manned the corner and passed out tracts. After a half hour or so, Daniel suggested that we return to the small ample theater adjacent to the Starbucks because of the back ground noise being high at our present position.

[This is in downtown Portland, OR. Couldn’t find a name for it, but I’m pretty sure I’ve been to the precise spot described here. If so, the topography of the plaza is kinda amphitheatre-like. I think the combo of “small†and “ample†is pretty telling here. The writer uses “ample theater†again in the next paragraph.]
The most intact parts of the site are the forum, whose white colonnade gleamed in the sunlight, and the ample theater, which, unlike the one in Soli, is arrestingly preserved.
