Re: "Proving his metal" metal/mettle

Welcome to the forum, kas. This reshaping is already included in the Eggcorns Database; it’s here: http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/english/453/metal/

The entry’s worth reading—it notes that “mettle” originally started out as a variant spelling of “metal.”

Re: "Proving his metal" metal/mettle

I hadn’t thought about this recently, but ‘proving his medal’ may be an improvement on ‘metal.’ e.g.,

In conclusion, Iraqi security forces are proving their medal every day on the streets in various operations.

One afternoon while chopping Jesse would once again prove his medal.

So about 5 more days of freedom before I have to turn on the afterburners and prove my medal to become a Marine Corps Officer. ...
