Can’t link to the example I first saw as it’s someone’s facebook status… he’s referring to not being over his cold yet… but there are plenty of examples when googling.

I think the new imagery is possibly very similar to the original, a sense of being lost… but with some added negativity. Weeds grow when things are not under control, when they have gotten out of hand. Disordered.

Perhaps the popularity of golfing contributes to this eggcorn. The idiom ”(not) out of the rough (yet)” is popular. The second cut of rough is usually full of weeds.

This is probably influenced by the idiom “in the weeds”, which was investigated by Language Log.
