"ends and outs" for "ins and outs"

“ends” for “ins” has been mentioned on this site, but in the context of the phrase “from here on in (end)”, not in the context of “ins (ends) and outs”, as in this sentence I just encountered on an email chatlist: “I do not know all the ends and outs of being a beader/jewelry maker.”

It seems like an eggcorn to me. I think the meaning is just barely there, enough to call it an eggcorn, because knowing all the ends could mean something like knowing all the loose ends, which is similar to knowing all the details of something.

Works for me. Eggcorn, I say!

Knowing the end(s) from the beginning(s) (= ins ?), and ends in the sense of “purposes”, may be relevant as well.

I just saw this one in the wild yesterday in a comment on a NextDoor post:

“I would say contact an attorney, just because they know the ends and outs.”

This does make especially good sense in the context of lawyering. A good lawyer knows the ends in more than one sense (what the client wants or should want to do, and also what will be a good outcomes or a good finishing line for the process), and the outs (the ways to weasel around obstacles, or what ways the client’s opponent might try to weasel out and how to out-weasel him or her.) Works well for me!

Re: "ends and outs" for "ins and outs"

I can explain to you all the engine outs of stacking, how you can easily learn and carry it. Explanation to pickleball stacking: understand stacking.

What happened was, I don’t want to go into all the engine outs of it, but as you know, I started to KFC franchise himself. just really on …

An ‘engine out’ procedure is part of the drill and training of pilots (I hope) but it seems to displace quite happily in the examples above.

All these engine outs are one of my favorites in a long time.
