I couldn’t quite believe I had heard a park ranger on television describing the landscape in this way, but sure enough there are some instances on the web where “awe-inspiring” seems to be what they had in mind, such as “The island has eye-inspiring rocky cliffs.”

Nice one! And yes, often you can’t quite believe, much less be sure, you heard it, so you google it, and —wa-lah!— they show up.

This one may well be, at least sometimes, a blend with “eye-catchingâ€. Which doesn’t keep it from being an eggcorn, of course, either for those who don’t do it as a blend or those who do. But many usages don’t seem to mean so much the same as “awe-inspiring†as something less strong: “pleasing to the eye, visually attractiveâ€. Wonder if “eye-candy†might be in the blend too?
