'the hank of' for 'the hang of'

This seems most unlikely – I can’t see where ‘hank’ could fit in with acquiring a knack – so the best I can come up with is the notion of seizing something by the merest tuft. Not very compelling:

Could there be something going on with “hankering.” A “hanker” is a desire. Perhaps “hank” could be generalized to something that is desirable to have.

There’s also the phrase “to have no hank with.” Not common today, though I heard it a lot as a child. It means to have no dealings, no relationship, with. So “hank” might be thought to mean dealings, a relationship. “Getting the hank of something” would then be having a relationship with something.
