Adj as I’ll get out

He is coordinated, smart as anything, and extremely perceptive. Cute as I’ll get out, too!

It is as annoying as I’ll get out. Hope it ceases sooner rather than later for you but it will take you speaking out against this and perhaps even …

That’s a beautiful gun, functional as I’ll get out, and a smokin’ deal, IMO. Ya dun good.

The efficient-as-I’ll-get-out proponents of RFID have a great argument, and in retail especially, RFID continues to hold tremendous efficiency challenges

This one was apparently standard for a niece of mine, and indeed it seems like one couldn’t substitute typing I’ll for all if one didn’t mean to. What does it mean?
.
In the first place, “Adj as all get-out ” is not very clearly analyzable: I know what parts are there, but am not sure what their contribution to the whole is or how they are coordinated.
.
With strongly negative adjectives, e.g. “annoying as I’ll get out” above, it works extremely well for me: it is so annoying that I will get out of the place rather than have to deal with it.
.
With positive adjectives (which seem to be the majority) I might think e.g. “so cute I won’t even try to compete…I’ll just get out of the way.”
.
In any case, if the acorn is stuck together hodge-podge so we don’t quite know how the pieces fit, why can’t the eggcorn be?

Re: Adj as I’ll get out

This one makes me chuckle. I imagine a three-person scenario:

Person 1: He’s as cute as all!
Person 2: Get out!

Person 3—hearing the conversation, but not paying attention—files it away mentally as ”... I’ll get out!”

And that’s about the most sense I can make of this outrageous reshaping!

Re: Adj as I’ll get out

NIce post. “As all get out” is a favorite idiom of my mom’s, and I found it utterly flabbergasting when I was a kid.

In any case, if the acorn is stuck together hodge-podge so we don’t quite know how the pieces fit, why can’t the eggcorn be?

This line of argument has come up before, and personally I think I’ve drifted toward a “conservative” viewpoint on the problem over the years. For me, eggcorns are reshapings that make that which was semantically/etymologically opaque in the acorn more transparent. And sure, that’s holding eggcorns to “a higher standard” than most standard words in the lexicon, but that higher standard is part of the definition of “eggcorn.”

Re: Adj as I’ll get out

I agree, Pat. But I’m also happy with saying this is very close to an eggcorn, an eggcorn-like reshaping that fails of full eggcornhood because we have chosen to limit category membership to reshapings that make more complete sense. It is hard to draw the line, though, in a place that all will agree is the right one.
