"heads and tails" for "head and shoulders"

I just read this today in a magazine interview with cartoonist Stephan Pastis (of “Pearls Before Swine” fame): ”...’Peanuts’ is heads and tails above everybody, then ‘Garfield’ and then ‘Dilbert’ to some extent.”

He obviously meant “head and shoulders”. I don’t think it’s an eggcorn, because the meaning connection isn’t quite there, but I found it kind of interesting because I’d never seen it before that I recall, and it doesn’t appear to have been mentioned on this site before. I was surprised to find over 9,900 ghits for “heads and tails above”, though some of them were apparently purposeful puns (in advertising for pet shops).
