“Tub boat†for “tug boat†is fairly common. Tug boats do look a little like tubs. They are also tubby (=squat and round).
Many examples of “tub boat†on the web do not refer to tug boats. But some do. To prove that people have tug boat in mind when they write or say “tub boat,†here are two references with pictures and one with sound:
Title for user-submitted picture: “ Tub boat and freighter seen from the Southport – Fort Fisher Ferry†(http://www.panoramio.com/photo/2721395)
Another picture title: “ Tub boat “ (http://travel.webshots.com/photo/127844 … 7816EequTC)
Ad for a musical instrument: “this whistle sounds just like an old time tub boat whistle.†(http://larkinthemorning.com/product.asp … 1235444485)
Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
