Bringing sediments from a river bed to the surface for removal has been known as dredging since the beginning of the 16th century. The word is probably connected to both dragging, and perhaps indirectly to dregs, from a Norse word for sediments (who knows, there may have been some eggcornish blending going on here again). On the other hand, dredging up bad memories, or the past, is a metaphor for digging into unpleasant depths to find things that we might prefer to leave buried. It might be this unpleasant mental association that brings “dread” into the equation:

I’m not aware of a term for the hemieggcorn that occurs when a root word that is unknown to the user is resubsituted for its cousin, but such a coinage would be useful here, to describe the substitutions of “dregs up” and “drags up” for dredges up. “Dregs up” got 160 ughits.

Awesome post, @burred. Kind of stole my thunder for the current post, though, which is based on an e-mail I got from an old friend who thanked me for dreading up memories. So kind of a malapropism that yet seems to fit, or a psychological slip. Those that involve bad circumstances.
But my body just doesn’t want to accept thin juices – it’s just too traumatic, dreading up memories of the colonoscopy drinks.

They waited for several specialists to arrive, before setting out on the search, after all this was a police matter and care needed to be taken to preserve evidence. The siblings sat and thought about the past years dreading up memories.
